There’s something irresistible about a beautifully kept vintage purse. The clasp clicks just so, the silk lining whispers as it opens, and you can almost hear the conversations it overheard at long-ago dinner parties. This week at Pollyanna’s Antiques, we have a small collection in, and every piece has a personality all its own.

The undeniable star is a black evening clutch covered in a riot of beaded and jeweled florals: pinks, blues, greens, citrine yellow, and a glittering central stone surrounded by tiny rhinestones. It’s the kind of bag that doesn’t need an outfit; the outfit gets built around the bag.

Beside it sits a soft cream and peach beaded evening purse finished with a long, swaying bead fringe that catches the light with every step. Then there’s a petite gold metallic beaded coin purse with a kiss-lock frame, charming on its own or layered with a longer evening bag.

We also have two chainmail mesh bags that feel as decadent today as they did a century ago. One is in warm ivory with a fine woven drape, the other in cool silver with a polished gold frame. Both are flexible, fluid, and surprisingly substantial in the hand. Mesh purses like these were a Victorian-era favorite that carried right through the Art Deco years.

Rounding out the group is a marvelous black floral box purse trimmed in gold, structured like a tiny travel case with a top handle. It’s the practical glamour of midcentury entertaining in one perfect little package.

Each one is a wearable piece of history, ready for an evening out, a wedding, or simply a shelf display where it can be admired.

Come see the full collection in person at Pollyanna’s Antiques, 287 North Avenue in downtown Mt. Clemens. We’re open Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday from 10 AM to 4 PM.
