Every home needs a good doorman, and this one happens to have four short legs and the longest body in the shop. Cast entirely in iron, this charming dachshund has spent a lifetime doing two honest jobs at once, scraping the mud from a visitor’s boots and holding the door open on a breezy afternoon.
Long before doormats and weatherstripping, a cast iron boot scraper by the door was simply good sense. Families kept one on the porch or just inside the entry, and the most beloved versions took the shape of a favorite animal. A loyal little wiener dog, low to the ground and built like a bench, was the perfect candidate for the job.
The casting is full of personality. You can see the gentle droop of his ears, the soft expression on his face, and the long arched back that doubles as the working surface. His tail curls into a tidy loop at the back, a handle for lifting him into place, and the years have left a warm, worn patina on his nose and paws where countless hands and boots have touched.
These days he is just as happy indoors. Set him by the front door to greet guests, tuck him against a bookcase to keep it from drifting shut, or simply let him stand watch in a sunny corner where his solid silhouette can be admired. Dog lovers, take note, he will never need walking and never beg at the table.
Heavy, handsome, and full of character, an iron friend like this does not come along often. Come meet him in person at Pollyanna’s Antiques in downtown Mt. Clemens. We are open Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday from 10 to 4, and he would love to make your acquaintance.
