Every haunted house has one room where the party never stops, and at Pollyanna’s Antiques it is the big fireplace. The witches’ dinner is still waiting and the little mantel is still flickering, but over here someone lit the lanterns, struck up a tune, and invited every pumpkin in the county.
Look up first. A witch seems to have flown straight into a heavy gilded frame, leaving behind nothing but her wide black hat, a tangle of orange polka-dot ribbon, and a pair of striped stockings dangling below. Along the mantel, a grinning pumpkin with a knowing look sits among black garland and tiny orange lights, while a long-legged spider has helped himself to a lollipop. A dapper skeleton in a top hat leans in from the corner as if he arrived fashionably late.
Music by the fire
Down below, our band has taken the settee. A skeleton in overalls and striped sleeves strums his banjo among pillows that say it plainly: Boo, Happy Halloween, and Wild and Wicked. A black cat pillow stares out with orange eyes, clearly unimpressed by the music.
Beside them stands a tall grandfather clock with brass weights and a painted moon dial, keeping time for a crowd that has all the time in the world. Next to it, an autumn tree spills maple leaves and warm lights down onto a heap of velvet, gold, and green pumpkins. Across the way, a waterfall-front cabinet with arched glass doors wears an enormous spider on its crown, and a crystal candle sconce throws a little sparkle across the wall.
Come see the whole house in person, from the dinner table to the dance floor. We’re open Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday, 10 to 4, at 287 North Avenue in downtown Mt. Clemens. Pull up a chair by the fire. The band takes requests, but only after dark.
